Maxim Integrated’s “ModelGauge m5” technology, which is used in their comprehensive family of fuel gauges.
Fuel gauges measure the amount of charge, or “fuel”, left in a battery so the user knows how much longer the battery can power their device. So when you realize it’s time to charge your portable device because it’s at 14%, you can thank your fuel gauge for keeping you in the loop!

The original ModelGauge algorithm uses measured voltage to estimate the battery state of charge. This has been improved upon in ModelGauge m3 and in latest iteration, m5. ModelGauge m3 added coulomb counting to the original voltage-based algorithm to provide greater accuracy in more applications. And ModelGauge m5 offers even greater accuracy, and additional features including time-to-full, and Cycle+ age forecasting, which estimates when the battery will start deteriorating faster towards the end of its life cycle.
Maxim’s fuel gauges also offer other features you’d want in a battery powered application. The most recent m5 Fuel Gauge, the MAX17055, comes in a tiny 1.4×1.5mm package, and only consumes 7uA of operating current, which helps preserve the very battery it’s monitoring.
